Note
Gross National Distress is a research project initiated by 3l33lyl00ng that revisits the phenomena of spirit possessions in the 1970s against the economic and political background of Singapore’s industrialisation strategies.
The first half of the website attempts to provide the viewer with context and the motivation behind this project
One of these industrialisation strateges that will be closely examined is the promotion of “productivity consciousness”. This builds the foundation for works/ideas that obliquely or directly reflect and co-inform the research material.
Much of the information comes from literary sources that have shaped or challenged initial perceptions of how workers operate under structures governing factory life and labour. This website also features oral interviews and recollections of factory life by three individuals, Zainab Mahmood, Nadia Florman and Azfar Sidek.
The second half of this website consists of various audiovisual experiments that were conducted through the use of the moving image and other forms of art making. Most of these audio-visual experiments have been initiated to facilitate a more complete or coherent vision.
